Ok, so you've decided it is time to finally work on improving your game. Well, that's good to hear, but make sure you've got a clear understanding on how to improve.
Improvement Step 1 - Find Out Where You Need to Improve
Sounds simple, doesn't it. However, this turns out to be the most difficult part of improving. Let's say that you slice the ball. Well, obviously that's what you need to improve right? Unfortunately, no. That is merely the result of the real problem. Your grip might be wrong, your stance might be open, or your club path might be wrong.
Finding out exactly what is wrong isn't always easy. Your friends probably won't know, you probably won't know. But your golf instructor is your best friend at this stage of improvement. With the help of a qualified golf instructor, you'll be set on the correct path for improvement.
Improvement Step 2 - Proper Learning
Well, now you've got your improvement goals. How do you go about changing them. It is simple. You've got to ingrain the new feelings.
You don't have to do the same thing, hours and hours a day. But, you do need to spend at least 20 to 30 minutes three or four times a week working on exactly what your golf instructor has identified. You simply need to maintain what you have learned. Remember the saying, if you don't use it, you'll lose it!
Improvement Step 3 - Effective Practice
Finally, you've been working on your problem areas so you are ready to spend some time with general practicing. Grab the driver and off to the range! Right? Well, not quite. Consider the following:
The breakdown of a typical round of golf is as follows:
- PUTTING - 43%
- CHIPPING/PITCHING - 14%
- DRIVING - 21%
- SHORT IRONS - 10%
- LONG IRONS - 4%
- BUNKER PLAY - 8%
So understanding where you will be spending your time on the golf course is vital to understanding what you need to practice!
Unfortunately, most weekly golfers will practice once or twice each week and only practice the full
swing. Often with only the driver. And then they wonder why they aren't improving. Well they are only practicing 21% of the game!
Improvement as you can see from the above figures clearly shows that in addition to the driver, putting, chipping, and pitching are the keys to fully unlocking your scoring potential.
So don't forget this golden quote of golf:
Drive for show and putt for dough!!
Improvement Step 4 - Have Fun!
Don't forget to have fun! If you're going to spend a lot of time working on your game it will be easier if you can remember to have fun along the way!
