While everyone has different questions, we have answered some of the more frequent ones below.

Of course, if you still have questions, you can send us your question online using our getting started form, or call us at 336-510-GOLF. We’ll be glad to help.

Here's a few of the more common questions we are asked:

What will happen during my first private lesson?

Simon will work with you to learn what your goals you have, what you perceive to be your current problems, and what you are doing to improve. After this, Simon will begin assess your current strengths, weaknesses and any physical limitations you may have while working with you. At the end of the lesson, Simon will make practice recommendations.

After my first lesson, what will happen during my lessons?

A typical lesson will have you working on the issues which have been identified previously. Most lessons will include state of the art video analysis. Simon will work with you on correcting the problem identified, and adjust your technique during the lesson. Each lesson will end with practice suggestions covering things you should be practicing and in some cases, drills to help you speed the learning process.

I only have one problem, can I tell you what I want to fix?

Yes of course, Simon believes in treating everyone as an individual! Simon will also work with you to make sure the problem has been correctly identified just to be sure you are on the right track.

Why should I take a private lesson, won't group lessons be just as good?

While group lessons are both effective and economical, ultimately, private instruction is much better for the student of golf. In a group environment, you will have to share your time with other students. In a private class, you will have Simon's undivided attention. Learning the proper golf swing requires practice and the help of a trained professional while you are learning. With private instruction you get an intense focus from the instructor which well help you to learn better, faster, and with less frustration. All good things when learning golf!

Several of my friends are scratch golfers, can't I just ask them to help me?

This is a very good question, which has been asked this many times before. The scratch golfer knows how to play, but teaching someone how to play golf is an acquired art. Also, most amateur golfers have developed techniques that compensate for their personal swing flaws. These techniques will often cause much more harm to you rather than help you. In the end, the sequencing of new information at the precise time and how to communicate that information to fit the problem is why you need a professional with experience!

I'm certain I've figured out my problem, but none of the fixes I've been told to try by my friends are working. Can you help?

The best way to figure out swing problems is with the help of an certified golf professional and a state of the art video computer system to see what happens frame by frame in your swing. You may have figured out your problem, but often the help of friends will add to your problems, not solve them.

I want to hit it farther, how can you help me?

There are 5 key elements that create more distance:

  1. Centeredness of impact and squareness of clubface with the target
  2. The approach of the club to the ball prior to impact
  3. The angle of approach of the club
  4. The conservation of angular momentum (the relationship between the right wrist/right elbow and club shaft prior to impact)
  5. All the above combine to create what you need which is - club head speed!

While working with Simon, your swing will be analyzed and adjusted to ensure you are getting each of these elements just right to gain the extra yardage you seek.

I really want to be more consistent with my golf swing, how can private instruction help?

To really improve and play more consistent golf, you must first make a commitment to improve and then make a commitment to your instructor. Private instruction is the best way to get better faster than any other method. Given that improving your consistency is purely a journey of erasing old habits and instilling the right ones, private instruction makes sure you stay on course and don't get lost in the search.

Do I really need video?

It isn't a requirement to learn, after all the great players of the past didn't have video. But I do believe that we all learn better when we are able to use our visual, kinesthetic, and auditory senses. When you eliminate just one of these, you reduce the your ability to fully understand and thus learn a new skill. You can get there, but the journey is more difficult and slower.

Do you use training aids in your lessons?

Yes, they are a great way to help improve muscle memory and to feel a particular move.

I'm really scared that you will make me completely change my swing. Do I have to completely rebuild from scratch?

Once again, Simon is a firm believer that we are all individuals and he respects that everyone has different needs and desires. He will always find out where you would like to improve and show you the way to your goals. If this path suggests a new move, Simon won't try to force you to try it, but Simon will always show you the best options available to you and allow you to decide for yourself.

I've been to other instructors but I never get better. Why are you different?

Simon is passionate about helping golfers improve, but not everybody improves as quickly as they like, because golf has a nature of humbling even the very best of us.

How long will it take me to see results?

The results will come only if you put in the required amount of practice between lessons. Only then will you see lasting improvement. Truthfully, the more you practice, properly, the faster you will see improvements.

Secondly to trust a qualified professional who has a successful playing background, because professional who can't play.....teach and vice-versa.....Simon can do both!! which is very hard to find a Professional who can both play the game at a National level and also instruct at a Colliegate/Professional level.....Sounds like the best combination for improvement to me. As Iron sharpens Iron, so one man sharpen another.

How much can I expect to lower my handicap?

As low as you want! As long as you have the right knowledge that it takes to lower your handicap, added with the practice habits that it takes to solidify what has been instructed. But remember, the lower your handicap, the more dedicated to improving you must be. Instruction gives you the tools to improve but you must ultimately wield the tools yourself.
